Every baby brand wants you to believe you need more. More outfits, more accessories, more everything. The reality is that newborns need remarkably little clothing, and buying too much in advance is one of the most common mistakes first-time parents make.
Here is what your baby will actually wear in the first three months, and nothing more.
Why Less Is More
Newborns grow astonishingly fast. Many babies outgrow newborn-size clothing within two to four weeks. Others skip it entirely and go straight into 0β3 months. Buying twenty newborn outfits means most will be worn once or not at all.
A capsule approach β a small, carefully chosen wardrobe of versatile pieces β saves money, reduces waste, and means every item gets properly worn. Quality matters more than quantity at this stage.
The Essential Newborn Capsule: 20 Pieces
6β8 bodysuits β the foundation of every outfit. A mix of short-sleeve and long-sleeve covers you for any temperature. Crossover or kimono styles are easiest for the early weeks when babies dislike things being pulled over their heads.
4β6 sleepsuits β what your baby will live in day and night for the first weeks. Front-opening with full-length zips or poppers. Footed styles save you from hunting for socks.
3β4 pairs of leggings β for when you want a bodysuit-and-bottoms combination. Soft waistbands that do not dig into the umbilical cord area are essential.
2 hats or bonnets β for temperature regulation in the early days and for going outdoors.
2 pairs of mittens β to prevent scratching. Newborns have surprisingly sharp nails and limited control of their hands.
1β2 blankets β for swaddling, pram cover, feeding cover, and general comfort. One of the most versatile items you will own.
What You Do Not Need Yet
Shoes of any kind. Jeans or structured trousers β they are uncomfortable and impractical for nappy changes. Coats β a blanket over the car seat or pram is safer and more practical. More than two "nice" outfits β babies spend 90% of their time in sleepsuits.
Choosing the Right Fabric
When your wardrobe is small, each piece works hard. You need fabrics that withstand daily washing without losing softness or shape. Organic cotton β particularly long-staple Egyptian cotton β excels here because it gets softer with each wash and resists the pilling and thinning that ruins cheaper alternatives quickly.
A single well-made sleepsuit that lasts through two children is better value than three cheap ones that need replacing after a few weeks.
Neutral Colours Make It Easy
A capsule wardrobe works best when everything coordinates. Stick to two or three complementary colours β alabaster, soft blush, or muted naturals β and every piece works with every other piece. This makes getting dressed at 4am significantly easier.
When to Size Up
Buy the majority of your capsule in 0β3 months rather than newborn size. If your baby is small, you can roll sleeves and cuffs. If they are average or large, newborn size may only last days. A few newborn pieces for the very first days, then 0β3 months for the core wardrobe, is the safest approach.
